In the beginning, we (George and Darcey Richburg) started with the dream of building our own cowherd. In August 2016, with the purchase of a registered Angus bred heifer and a weaned commercial heifer calf running on rented pastures the dream became a reality and D/G Ranch was born. In 2017 we purchased our homestead in Clanton, AL and in 2019 and 2023 we purchased additional pasture land in Verbena, AL to accommodate our quickly growing operation. Building a cattle operation from scratch- purchasing land, equipment and cattle while both working full time jobs to help make our vision of D/G ranch come true had its challenges... mainly time and money.
Our goal is to build a sustainable cattle ranch known for integrity and quality cattle that will continue through the next generation - we welcomed our daughter Devyn in July 2024.
Our Mission
We strive to be a sustainable cattle operation with a docile cow herd that excels on low inputs and can thrive in the southeast being slick haired and sound footed. Our breeding philosophy is to not chase extremes but attain balance with phenotype, performance, maternal traits, and carcass traits. Ultimately we want cattle that not only work for us but cattle that will be profitable for our fellow cattlemen and cattlewomen.
History
In the early years the majority of the females we purchased were to be used as receipts as we felt that by purchasing embryos and eventually flushing our own cows would enable us to raise the kind of cattle we wanted quicker with out *completely* breaking the bank! From the beginning we were more focused on buying good, functional females regardless of breed or color, we wanted cows that could serve a purpose for our growing operation. Currently we run 65-70 cows that consist of 2/3 being Registered Angus and Simmental with the remaining 1/3 being commercial females, including Darcey's pet red brahman, Dorothy. We take pride in the fact that our receipts run along side our donors, all cows are treated the same and are bred to thrive in their environment.
From the beginning we have been developing bulls, turning out our own bulls after we AI and implant embryos each year. We adhere to a strict culling process- only keeping the ones that are sound, docile, and with performance that meet our standards that can work for seedstock and commercial producers alike. If you are looking for your next herd sire, give us a call and we will be more than happy to help you achieve your goals.
Located in central Alabama just a few minutes off of I-65, you are welcome to stop by and look at cattle. We are proud of what we have built and always enjoy talking about cows!
